Valentine’s Surprise

Someone sent me a valentine. It must be a mystery admirer, as the card was not signed. But it was propped against the front door and I found it when I headed out to get the newspaper from the end of the driveway today. That was nice. But it raises the delicate question of who to mention it to and who to to thank.

Already Melting

Well, parts of the state got about 6 inches of snow, but at my house we have about 4 inches and it is already melting.Of course, all the schools are closed in the interest of safe driving by school bus drivers who have to go up the treacherous mountain roads covered with snow and ice.

The snow was very dry and not the kind that makes a good snowball or snowman, but seems to be good for sledding. I have seen some neighborhood kids dragging sleds behind them as they walk down the road toward the farm. The snow would have blown about if there had been any wind. Thankfully, we didn’t have much wind and there are not large drifts anywhere that I can see.

We just have to let the sun do its job and melt this damn stuff. I’m not going to waste my time shoveling snow when it will be melted in a day or two.

Here comes the snow

We’ve had some snow already but now the “big one” seems to be headed our way. The weather forecast is for anywhere between 3 inches and a foot of accumulation. It just depends on whether the approaching storm from Texas and Oklahoma end up head straight East or if it takes a utrn to the north. We’ll see by morning which way it goes.

Good Month for Reading

Think I’ll head down to the library today and pick out a few good books. The weather is going to be pretty crappy these next couple of weeks. There is nothing on TV but reruns and the same old crap, so I will spend the little bit of leisure time that I have expanding my mind with literature. I used to buy books, but eventually realized that I don’t read them more than once and it is silly to buy a lot of things that just end up taking space and collecting dust. So I have a library card and try to use it a few times each year. It makes more sense.

Heading for the Gulf

This weekend I have big plans for a getaway to the gulf of Mexico. I have a buddy in Pensacola who keeps a boat there and we get together a few times each year to go deep sea fishing.

It’s a long drive from here. A typical trip takes 8 hours if I drive at night and only make one stop for gas. There isn’t really any decent air service between here and Pensacola, so there’s not much else you can do but drive the 8 hours straight down Route 65.

There’s not much scenery once you get below Birmingham. Just a lot of farm fields and pine trees. So I don’t mind driving at night – less traffic and the trip seems to go faster.

No Coffee – It’s an Emergency!

Coffeemaker broke this morning. It didn’t have the decency to make my morning pot of coffee before breaking. It broke as I was closing the lid over the coffee filter. So no coffee for me this morning. It’s going to be a very long day.

Star Trek at Night

If you ever have a bout with insomnia and need something to do, turn on CBS and watch the old reruns of the Star Trek series. What is running right now is the Star Trek – The Next Generation series, with Captain Piccard.

It is amazing to realize that this series came out over 20 years ago. Can we really be that old?

Breakfast for Dinner

Sometimes I just have a hankering for breakfast foods at night. I’m not much of a breakfast eater during the weekdays. But tonight I decided I wanted to have hash with scrambled eggs and toast. So that’s dinner for me tonight.
