First Race Delayed

Been waiting for the start of this year’s NASCAR race season. Once the Super Bowl was over, we hit a couple of weeks of total boredom as far as sports on TV goes. So I was looking forward to yesterday for the first race – the Daytona 500. And the damn thing gets rained out. Darn the luck.

So I hear it will be on TV tonight – I hope they wait until most people are able to get home from work. A lot of fans are really looking forward to watching this race – especially with Danica Patrick in this one.

Phone Overboard

Well, today was not a good one for me. I started out having a great day – we went fishing at the Lake. Didn’t really expect to catch anything, but it has been so warm that getting the jon boat out sounded like a good idea. So we spent 3 hours putting worms on hooks and didn’t catch a thing. On the way back to the boat ramp, I leaned over to check the motor and PLOP! My cell phone jumped out of my pocket and went overboard. Totally my own fault – can’t even yell at anyone.

No Snow Yet

Here we are into January and we have not had “winter” yet. There has not been any snow and it is not cold – knock on wood. Not just here in Tennessee – but most of the country is having unusually warm temperatures. This morning I saw a news report that a lot of ski resorts are having trouble keeping snow on the slopes – it is not cold enough for man made snow. I find this a little troubling. Not that I can do anything about it, but I worry that the lack of snow will mean a drought for many places this spring.

Ready for Fishing

Bought my new State Fishing License today. In this area you have to have a license to fish, and I agree with that as long as the monies collected go to support our wildlife and parks.

Although I can walk to the Lake from my house, there are no sidewalks and the road is pretty busy with traffic. I honestly do not feel safe walking on the side of the road. Especially on the weekends when there are all these drunk fools who have been out on the Lake drinking beer all day and then driving home.

I plan on spending the entire day at the Lake on Saturday. If you need me, you can find me there.

Ban Joggers

I’m about sick of all these people running through my neighborhood. They claim to be jogging. I say they are causing problems for the cars who should rightfully be driving the road unencumbered. If these people don’t stay on the sidewalks and out of the streets, they should get a ticket.

Heading for the Gulf

This weekend I have big plans for a getaway to the gulf of Mexico. I have a buddy in Pensacola who keeps a boat there and we get together a few times each year to go deep sea fishing.

It’s a long drive from here. A typical trip takes 8 hours if I drive at night and only make one stop for gas. There isn’t really any decent air service between here and Pensacola, so there’s not much else you can do but drive the 8 hours straight down Route 65.

There’s not much scenery once you get below Birmingham. Just a lot of farm fields and pine trees. So I don’t mind driving at night – less traffic and the trip seems to go faster.

Bottom Fishing

Later tonight the news will have a fishing story. Some guy at a lake pulled in a human leg today. I can’t imagine what lake this guy was fishing. But I want to watch the news and find out. And I wonder about the rest of the body that goes along with that leg.

Ready to Fish

I’m heading out this weekend for my first fishing day. The weather has not been good for fishing on the weekends, and I can’t get away during the week until later this summer. So I’m going to have to buy my fishing license and maybe a few things for my gear, and I’m ready to find a good spot on Saturday unless we get more bad weather.

A Redskins Legend Passes

A long time Redskins fan will surely recognize the name Sammy Baugh. This man was one of the best in his time, and a world class quarterback who revolutionized the use of the forward pass.

Slingin’ Sammy Baugh, the ultimate three-way threat, died tonight at 94 years old.

Sammy played with the Redskins from 1937 to 1952. He led them to the NFL title his first season and again in 1942. In 1943, he led the NFL in passing, punting and defensive interceptions. Baugh was the last surviving member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s inaugural class.

Sammy Baugh was a great football player and an inspiration to many. He will be missed.

Zorn Getting the Boot?

The redskins really let us down yesterday with an embarrassing 20-13 loss to Cincinnati. Especially since the Bengals are one of the worst teams in the NFL with their previously 1-11-1 record. I mean, WTF?

The buzz around the Redskins base camp was whether owner Dan Snyder will fire Coach Jim Zorn after just one season in charge. After all, Snyder paid Norv Turner, Marty Schottenheimer and Steve Spurrier not to coach the team when they fell into disgrace. Let’s hope the Redskins have a win this next week against Philly. It will be tough, but this team can be tough.
