Fried Chicken

When I was a kid, we had fried chicken on Sundays. It was just what everyone did. We got up early, went to church, and then we all headed to Grandma’s house for Sunday dinner. All the adult women brought food with them or spent time in the kitchen preparing a big meal for the whole family. While dinner was cooking, us kids would play outside or, if it was raining, we would run around in the basement.

Sunday dinner was usually the best fried chicken you would ever taste, along with home made mashed potatoes and a variety of fresh vegetables and salads. I loved dessert, too. It was often a big slice of pie, but sometimes we would have thenmost wonderful cakes made from scratch.

Ahh. Those were the days of great food and family time.

Alan Jackson on Letterman

Tonight the David Letterman show is having Alan Jackson as the musical guest. I have to say that this show offers a great variety of musical artists. They have everyone from rap to rock to county and all kinds of people even sit in with the band every once in a while.

Looking forward to hearing an Alan Jackson song – wonder what he;s going to play?

Think I’ll head down to the library today and pick out a few good books. The weather is going to be pretty crappy these next couple of weeks. There is nothing on TV but reruns and the same old crap, so I will spend the little bit of leisure time that I have expanding my mind with literature. I used to buy books, but eventually realized that I don’t read them more than once and it is silly to buy a lot of things that just end up taking space and collecting dust. So I have a library card and try to use it a few times each year. It makes more sense.

If you ever have a bout with insomnia and need something to do, turn on CBS and watch the old reruns of the Star Trek series. What is running right now is the Star Trek – The Next Generation series, with Captain Piccard.

It is amazing to realize that this series came out over 20 years ago. Can we really be that old?

This old song from way back has been a hit for Tony Joe White for probably 30 some years. Maybe more. I think it came out in 1970 – maybe even 1969. I have a hard time placing what was going on in my life when the song came out. But I feel like I’ve heard it all my life.

Just bought the DeNiro and Pacino movie that came out on DVD called “Righteous Kill.”I always beef up my DVD collection over the summer when there’s nothing worth a hoot on TV at night.

It’s a good story line but I have to take issue with the writer giving these guys the nicknames. I don’t think every grown man needs a nickname, espcially cops. The name “Turk” and “Rooster” sound more like comedic biker names than tough guy cops.

It was written by Russell Gewirts, if you remember “Inside Man.” So I’m looking for a few more hit thrillers from this guy in the future.

Hollywood I Miss You

Friday night used to be movie night, back in my younger days. It’s the perfect date and I used to look forward to it. Not really sure how I got out of that habit.

Tonight I want to do something different. Its been a long time since I’ve gone out to the movie theater and seen a movie on the big screen. Don’t even know what movie I want to see, but I just have the urge to get out there and see something.

Times are tough and money is tight, but life is more than just going back and forth to work and then sitting on the couch like a boob.

Sometimes you hear a wonderful singing voice and you can’t wait to tell everyone you know about it. If you ever get the chance to listen to Leslie Ellis sing, you will hear the sweetest voice in all of Nashville. This pretty lady has a marvelous voice and she won a Grammy to prove it.
